I first saw work by Hugo Canoilas when a visiting artist came into University and showed his work. They were presented on huge drapes of material which seemed to hang independently of a wall.
This exhibition was part of AV festival in Gateshead and was shown at The Workplace Gallery.
Walking into the gallery was quite dramatic. The lights were low and it was hard to see after being outside. Luckily the curator, Becca, was lovely and friendly and showed me around (with a cup of tea! :)
The work downstairs gave a powerful feeling of depression underneath a brightly coloured beautiful material, which felt was unobtainable if you were in the squalor below it. It made me think of George Orwell's 1984.
Upstairs the images of dinosaurs were awesome, my favourite being A Kind of Sinister Magnificence (see below). I like the was the back ground ink has been applied to use marks to suggest a background for the viewer to interpret.
In another room was an image Burma. I like the idea of hanging a frame like this, suspended away from the wall so you can walk around it.
